POEM: Broken Pieces

63

By Richard Craig

I’m sitting in the centre of broken pieces

Shards of determination scattered all around

I burn

The world is black and white with no sound

My fingers clenching the hairs on my head

Personal thoughts gather to insult me

I breathe

From the corner of my eye I see a sparkle

A single flash from a shard like a twinkle in the stars

My thoughts fall silent as another shard twinkles

I touch

Just in that moment I feel the energy

I pick up one piece and grace it in my hand

Like a crystal ball I see me and my future

I sigh

The image is as colourful as the world around me

But then another sparkle from another shard

I grip it with my left as I see it matches the one in my right

I feel

I hold these together to form a bigger picture

They fix together willingly as other pieces begin to twinkle

One by one I rebuild that what I shattered in defeat

I stand

Another piece is added to this puzzle

The twinkling increases the more I build

From the centre of the image colour bleeds

I behold

As I pick up the final piece from the ground beneath me

I place it softly in the gap that’s vacant

In a flash of light full colour is restored

I engage

I now see where I’m going and go I will

My dreams restored in hope and passion

From just one spark I had a thousand

I smile
